A New American Picture – Doug Rickard
I used the image archive of Google Street View to virtually explore the streets of America, specifically looking for bleak, forgotten places. Themes of race, class, technology, privacy and surveillance are layered simultaneously with themes that question photography itself. By moving the camera within a frozen world, and then selecting images from the millions available, emerge a poem of the American Dream, inverted. In the new world, everyone is watched, and yet masses remain invisible.
